Symbiotics addresses Mad Cow/ BSE Frenzy
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Symbiotics, Inc. Public Relations (800) 784-4355 pr@symbiotics.com Symbiotics addresses Mad Cow/ BSE Frenzy There has been a great deal of public interest in the spread of BSE in Britain and Europe. To date, there are no known cases of BSE in the United States. Symbiotics, Inc. distributes supplements in many forms that contain bovine colostrum from New Zealand. We would like to address this issue and reassure our customers that our products are guaranteed 100% safe and completely free of disease. What is BSE (Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy)? BSE, which occurs in adult cattle, is one of a group of brain-wasting diseases known as Transmissible Spongiform Encephalopathies (TSEs). It was first identified in Britain in 1986. The disease has an incubation period of 3-5 years. This debilitating neurological illness causes brain cells to deteriorate in cattle, resulting in erratic behavior including charging; hence the term ‘mad cow’ disease. How is BSE transmitted? The disease spreads when cattle feed on meat and bone meal of infected sources. Studies in Britain confirm that BSE cannot be transmitted from a cow to her calf through her colostrum or milk. What is New Zealand’s TSE status? New Zealand’s livestock populations are free from all TSEs- Scrapie in sheep and goats, BSE in cattle, and CWD in deer. New Zealand is internationally recognized explicitly and implicitly as free from BSE by many regulators and scientists. Why is New Zealand free of these diseases? New Zealand’s farmers use grass-fed, pasture-based management systems. Importing meat and bone meal for feeding livestock has been illegal in New Zealand for almost 50 years. New Zealand is ensured of an extremely low likelihood of BSE entering the cattle population due to its grass-fed, pasture-based farming system and the absence of Scrapie and BSE. Is there any verification of New Zealand’s status? In July 2000, the EU Scientific Steering Committee (EU SSC) published the results of a “Geographical BSE-Risk Assessment” of 24 countries. New Zealand was classified in Category 1, the lowest risk category (highest achievable category). The assessment rated the “likelihood” that live cattle could be clinically or pre-clinically infected with the BSE agent. Under the EU SSC assessment the US and Canada are Category 2, i.e. “unlikely, but not excluded.” See Also: New Zealand Certification of BSE-free status What about the New Zealand Dairy Group? The New Zealand Dairy Group is comprised of hundreds of farms around New Zealand which surpass internationally recognized quality standards. They currently hold ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 ratings. (An ISO 9001 rating verifies that the manufacturing processes and equipment meet stringent consumer safety requirements. The ISO 14001 rating ensures that no part of the manufacturing process harms the environment.) Colostrum production in New Zealand is overseen by the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, a governmental body that regulates colostrum’s collection, engineering, maintenance, manufacturing, product testing, quality control, and pathogen management. Are all New Life Colostrum Products from New Zealand? Symbiotics sources its entire line of colostrum products in New Zealand with the exception of New Life Colostrum HI-IG. This product is formulated in a way to provide the highest IG content available. New Zealand’s governmental regulations prohibit any changing of the product, so our manufacturer sources this product within the U.S. This supplier of raw colostrum conforms to strict standards and guarantees not to use growth hormones, pesticides or antibiotics. These cattle do not use unregulated feeding materials, and the dairies hold current USDA Grade A licenses. Symbiotics guarantees that New Life Colostrum products are BSE-free.
