What is SAM-E? SAM-E is not a vitamin or a herb. It is made in our body from methionine, an amino acid found in foods rich in protein. It works closely with B vitamins and is essential for the process of methylation, which affects many functions of the body including the regulation of various hormones and neurotransmitters such as adrenaline, dopamine, melatonin and serotonin. SAM-E for depression: For depression and enhanced mood, the key to SAM-e's effectiveness is its ability to make brain cells more sensitive to neurotransmitters. In at least 40 clinical studies involving thousands of patients SAM-e has been found to be as effective as prescription anti-depressants and is clearly less toxic. Individuals who have tried SAM-e express excitement over a treatment for depression which does not take out the highs as well as the lows in their day to day life; nor does it "kill your sex life", a common side effect of anti-depressants. For depression, 400 mg. per day of SAM-e is normally suggested, however, with SUPERIOR SAM-e less may be required. SAM-e for Arthritis: For arthritis, SAM-e was tested in a dozen clinical trials involving at least 22,000 patients, and was found to be as effective as pharmaceutical treatments for inflammation and pain. However, unlike arthritis strength doses of aspirin and ibuprofen, SAM-e does not destroy the digestive tract or slow the production of collagen and the tissues that make cartilage an effective shock absorber. In fact, instead of breaking down cartilage, SAM-e may help restore it. In Germany. for three months researchers gave 21 arthritis patients either SAM-e or a placebo. The SAM-e patients showed measurable improvement of the cartilage in their hands on MRI scans. And the Arthritis Foundation's medical experts are satisfied that SAM-e "provides pain relief". Other studies suggest that SAM-e can prevent or reverse liver damage caused by certain drugs as well as normalize liver function in people with cirrhosis, hepatitis and cholestasis.
